Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) Concentrations from Remote Sensing

  • To better understand and reduce uncertainty associated with aerosol-cloud interactions, one important piece of information is the vertical distribution of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). One method that we’ve used to look at CCN vertical distributions is by relating their concentrations to lidar extinction and backscatter.
  • In Lenhardt et al. (2023), we found that a strong linear relationship exists between lidar and CCN observations for smoke aerosols measured at low relative humidity (RH) conditions.
